Need To/Don't need to/ Needn't

Need to    -Don’t need to-    Needn't

👉Explanation:

We use "NEED TO" to express the idea that it is necessary to do something.

You need to get an appointment 2 months in advance to see the doctor.

-We use "DON'T NEED TO", "NEEDN'T" or "DON'T HAVE TO", to express the idea that something is not necessary.

You needn't take your shoes off.

You don't need to take your shoes off.

You don't have to take your shoes off.

* When it is a modal verb, need is most often used with verbs like: panic, worry, concern, fear or bother.

You needn't worry to feed the cat, she had enough today.

There is also a difference in use when these verbs are used to describe present situations.

We can use both needn't and don't need to to give permission to someone not to do something in the immediate future.

We can also use need as a noun here:

You don't need to water the garden this evening because it's going to rain tonight.

You needn't water the garden this evening because it's going to rain tonight.

There's no need to water the garden this evening because it's going to rain tonight.
